Why Manifest Journals’ Name Cracking Technology Solves the
Problem of Irregular Foreign Shipper Names and Irregular US
Importer Names in the US Customs’ Import Data

Two Reasons Why We Developed Our Name Cracking Technology

Reason #1: Because the Automated Manifest System (AMS) accepts free text entry, the AMS doesn’t require shipping lines and freight forwarders to enter a single version of a foreign shipper’s name or a US importer’s name.

For rollup/drill down reporting, we had to deal with the fact that in 2009, 85% of consignee names and 84% of shipper names in the US Customs’ raw data aren’t unique names.

In other words, 85% of consignee names and 84% of shipper names are irregular versions that must be reduced to a single, final name.

Why did we have to deal with this problem to give you rollup/drill down reporting? The logic is simple. Let’s use this scenario.

  1. You want a sum of total TEUs or kilograms for a US importer in 2009.
  2. Suppose there are five different versions of the US importer’s name in the 2009 US Customs’ import data.
  3. To get the total TEUs or kilograms in 2009, you must set the five different versions of the name equal to one version.
Reason #2: The consignee name or shipper name appears in a field that is not designated for the consignee name or shipper name.

This problem affects 4% of bills of lading.

Manifest Journals decided that 4% was too much to write off as an acceptable margin of error.

We can breakdown this problem into two parts.

  1. You can find the US importer name in one of 10 fields.
  2. You can find the foreign shipper name in one of 5 fields.
